Emperor Franz Joseph was born in this room in 1830. The original wallpaper with its printed pattern of foliage dates to the time when Franz Joseph’s parents, Franz Karl and Sophie, occupied these apartments, this being their bedroom. Today this room houses the only surviving bed of state from the Viennese court. It was made at the time of Maria Theresa’s marriage and was originally set up in the empress’s apartments in the Vienna Hofburg. The bed with its red velvet hangings and precious gold and silver embroidery has matching wall-hangings which display embroidered architectural motifs.
